History of Steer Engineering
Steer Engineering Pty. Ltd. commenced business in 1957. R J Steer founder, lived and worked on a family farm engaged in mixed farming. i.e. dairy, sheep and cropping. At the age of 17 he served an apprenticeship in fitting and turning with the naval docky ards in Williamstown, Garden Island, Sydney and Cockatoo Dockyard Sydney.
He left Cockatoo Dockyard Sydney to go to serve as junior engineer on oil tankers spending approximately 7 years at sea and included experience in standing by supervisor on new ship construction and repair work on tankers in foreign ship yards.
After returning to Australia, 2 years was spent on stock exchange dealings and a short accountancy course. In 1957 he set up his own business that was mainly concerned with manufacturing and developing a range of workshop equipment for farmers; as it was the time that electric welders were coming on to the market and little equipment was readily available.
During this period he was closely in contact with farmers and started developing livestock control equipment. After many years of attending farm field days and keeping in close contact with farmers, a great product range was developed.
Steer's willingness to lead in the area of livestock control equipment has had its rewards:
Winner at The Australian National Field Days for sheep yards.
Winner at Hamilton Sheepvention for electronic weighing platform.
The "Galvanised" farm paddock gate was introduced by
Steer Engineering.
International trophy for livestock control equipment at Hamburg.
Steer opened office/warehouse in Auckland New Zealand.
Steer attended the Ag Beef export promotion in China and
developed the Inner Mongolian project on livestock control. The
